Description
The ancient art of Dhokra lost wax metal casting is named after the Dhokra Damar tribes of India. Their artwork is treasured for its folk art motifs and primitive, yet intricate, forms. This horse and rider figure is an excellent example. The horse is arrayed with a double row of body straps with bells and his mane is braided. The warrior riding bareback is holding a scimitar--a short bladed sword--and is wearing a uniform. The fine detail achieved with this process is impressive.
The piece is heavy for its size, weighing 1 1/4 pounds. This partly due to the clay core, which is visible on the underside of the horse. It measures 6 1/2 inches tall to the top of the rider's headdress. The horse is 5 1/2 inches long from nose to tail. This beautiful cast brass piece dates from the early 20th century and is in excellent condition, with no cracks, chips or missing pieces. It has an overall darkened patina which we chose not to polish. It's a handsome and decorative figure alone or in a grouping.
