Description
This modernist Inuit carving was created by Alaskan native Glenn Tootkaylok. Glenn is the son of the late Thomas Tootkaylok, who was also a well-known Alaskan carver. The walrus with wooden tusks is made of blue gray soapstone and is displayed vertically for a stylized look. It's connected by an iron rod to a face carved of the same soapstone with a single cut-out eye; it's edged with a strip of fir, stained a warm brown. Another iron rod connects the sculptures to a base consisting of an irregular slab of black marble with a live raw edge.
This intriguing artwork is signed on the reverse "Glenn Tootkaylok Nome, Ak 2004." It measures 7 1/2 inches tall and 3 inches front to back at the base. Weighing 1 1/4 pounds, it's in excellent condition, with no damage whatsoever. Sculptures like this one reflect both contemporary design and historical Inuit life.
