Found in North Carolina, this charming original folk art painting depicts a red-winged blackbird perched on the stem of a cattail plant with a mallard duck floating in the pond below. Although this painting looks fairly new, it was covered with a piece of glass when we found it. The glass was filthy and nearly opaque, which protected the colors. Since paintings, other than watercolors, are not meant to have a glass cover, we removed it and revealed the beautiful, strong colors. The artwork was done on a piece of board, not commercial artist's board but a thin piece of wood. Folk art paintings are often done on whatever is at hand. The frame, which measures 9 1/2 inches top to bottom and 7 3/4 inches wide, was handmade of pine with a warm brown stain, nice grain and knotholes. The painting is secured in the frame with four black cut nails on the back. The sight size is 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches. It's signed "HAMM" at lower right. The painting weighs 3/4 of a pound and is in excellent condition, thanks to that glass cover. The frame has a few tiny no-harm nicks, but the glued (not nailed) corners are tight and the artwork displays nicely. FF 5531
