Vintage Decoy Folk Art Hooded Merganser

Hand carved of solid wood and hand painted, this hooded merganser drake decoy is a nice old piece of folk art. Its snaky head has inset glass eyes and its colors are painted in blocks, stripes and dashes, rather than the precise and exact feathers on a decorative display bird. We bought this in Indiana. 

This duck measures about 10 inches long from beak to tail, which makes it a half-size decoy. It stands 5 inches tall to the top of its head and 4 inches across the breast. It weighs about 1 1/4 pounds and sits high and firm on its brown-painted flat bottom. The bottom has some narrow shrink cracks and there are tiny nicks and chips in the paint, but the overall condition is very good and the distressed surfaces add character to this charming duck.
