Vintage Pine Needle Basket - Hand Coiled and Dyed - Tall Hoop Handle

This basket is beautifully made--tightly coiled with a tall hoop handle that's wrapped at the top for comfortable carrying. The coils are held together with strips of sisal from the maguey plant, AKA agave or century plant. The "ruffled" appearance is due to the ends of the long leaf needles that were left free instead of secured under the sisal. Many of the needles are dyed either green or red and used in cascading rows on the body of the basket and on the handle. 

This round basket is good-sized: 9 inches in diameter, 14 inches tall including the handle, about 4 inches tall without and weighing 1 1/2 pounds. In exceptional condition, with no breaks to the sisal, a full complement of pliable needles and excellent color, this handsome basket is a one of a kind piece.
